MT. KILIMANJARO ITINERARIES

 

ITINERARY  - Price (from $2680US) climb only  - Group departures:  DATES  Dec. 27, 2010  and February 13, 2011, July 9, 2011.

MACHAME ROUTE + African Safari: Camping

Dec. 27 Feb. 13 July 9   

Day 1/2

Arrive in Amsterdam early on the morning of Dec27. Overnight in hotel. Rest and get over jet-lag.  

Dec 29  Feb. 15  July 11

Day 3

Transfer in Amsterdam to flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport. We will meet in the arrival area at Kilimanjaro where our vehicle transfers us to the Keys Hotel in Moshi where rooms on a dinner/bed, breakfast basis is booked for you. The Keys Hotel is moderate by South African standards, but by far the best hotel in Moshi! It has a pool, hot water, good sized rooms with en-suite bathrooms, excellent pub, restaurant and patio areas.

Dec 30  Feb. 16  July 12

Day 4

Free morning to relax, stroll around Moshi and explore a bit. Group meeting in the afternoon. Pack personal gear into duffel bag that should not exceed 12kg. Your bag is carried by a porter so please be careful not to over pack.  Leave another bag with travel and safari clothes, etc. at the hotel in storage. Dinner / overnight at Keys Hotel.  

Dec 31  Feb. 17  July 13

Day 5

After breakfast we'll transfer to the Machame Park Gate. After registering with the park authority, we'll begin our climb through the lush forest. We'll continue on to some heath land before reaching our overnight camp at Machame Camp (10,000 feet, 6-7 hours of walking).

Jan. 1   Feb. 18  July 14

Day 6

Today's segment of the ascent will continue across beautiful heath land and alpine moorland with magnificent views of Kilimanjaro Peak. We'll overnight at Shira Camp (12,500 feet, 6-7 hours of walking).

Jan. 2   Feb. 19  July 15 Day 7  We'll draw nearer the peak as we pass the Lava Tower. The trek becomes a bit more strenuous as the trail steepens on the approach to our overnight stop at Barranco Camp (13,800 feet, 5-6 hours of walking).

Jan. 3   Feb. 20, July 16

Day  8

From Barranco camp, famous for its' giant groundsels (Senecio species), you ascend the Barranco wall and hike glacial valleys to Karanga camp. Today is a relatively short day hiking and lunch is taken at Karanga camp. In the afternoon a walk can be taken with your guides for great views of the Southern walls of Kibo and deep glacial valleys.

Jan.  4  Feb. 21  July 17

Day 9

Today is another half day ascending to Barafu camp. Once again lunch is taken in camp allowing plenty of time to relax before the summit bid. Desolate alpine desert and at times strong winds rip over this camp and yet in the evening splendid views of Mawenzi peak are the norm. A relatively early dinner is taken before heading to rest for the evening.

Day 10

Most people depart just before midnight for the final summit bid. Patience and persistence is the name of game to reach the summit and by dawn as the first rays of light start to appear, most arrive near the rim. Ascending via Stella Point affords a relatively short final section to Uhuru peak, the Roof of Africa! What goes up must come down and your goal today is to reach Mweka camp.

Day 11 After breakfast you descend once again through montane forest and around mid day after saying farewell to your crew, you are picked up and transfer back to the Keys Hotel for hot shower, dinner and a warm bed

Jan.  7  Feb. 24  July 20

Day 12 Travel to Lake Manyara, picnic lunch, game drive. Drive to Ngorongoro. Overnight at the beautiful Sopa Lodge..  

Jan.  8  Feb. 25  July 21

Day 13 Full day Crater tour with picnic lunch. Overnight at Ngorongoro the Sopa Lodge..  

Jan.  9  Feb. 26  July 22

Day 14 Travel to Tarangire, picnic lunch. Afternoon game drives in Tarangire and overnight at the Tarangire Sopa Lodge.  

Jan. 10 Feb. 27  July 23

Day 15 Morning activity (depending on weather) options include hiking, mountain biking, more game viewing, or relaxing by the pool. After lunch transfer to JRO airport for flight to Amsterdam or London.  
Jan.11  Feb. 28  July 24 Day 16 In Amsterdam- or London, connection to Vancouver or other destination.  Same day arrival home.

MARANGU + African Safari:  Hut Based

Your date Day 1

  Day 2

  Day 4

After breakfast you will be transferred to Marangu Gate (1 860 m), where you will commence the climb. The route passes through tangled rain forest to the Mandara Hut at 2 752 m, close to the Maundi Crater. The climb takes about 3 hours and is reasonably easy although the path is sometimes slippery. There is prolific birdlife and monkeys are usually seen.

  Day 5

You will continue your ascent through a short stretch of forest skirting the base of Mundai Crater, emerging into rolling alpine meadows with giant heather trees, and finally arrive at Horombo (3 780 m), set in a rocky valley with giant senecios and groundsels, where there is hut accommodation and full board. You have the option of an extra day at Horombo to acclimatize to the altitude, with a walk up to Point Mawenzi.

  Day 6 Acclimatization day. Rest, relax hike around. Overnight at the Horombo hut.
  Day  7

Climbing through Moorland forest then alpine desert. You will reach "The saddle" between the twin peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. Before Kibo you will come to "Jiwe la ukoyo". From here you will walk for about an hour to reach Kibo hut (4703m)  

  Day 8

Summit day! Very early start, usually 1:30am for the summit on steep and heavy scree up to Gilman's point (5686m) which is on the crater rim. Continue around the rim (which will take about two hours if you are fit) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) the highest place in all Africa. Descend to Kibo hut for tea and biscuit or soup and then down to Horombo hut.  

  Day 9

Descend to Marangu gate. Drive to Keys Hotel for hot shower, dinner and a warm bed.  

  Day 10

Travel to Lake Manyara, picnic lunch, game drive. Drive to Ngorongoro. Overnight at the beautiful Sopa Lodge..  

  Day 11

Full day Crater tour with picnic lunch. Overnight at Ngorongoro the Sopa Lodge..  

  Day 12

Travel to Tarangire, picnic lunch. Afternoon game drives in Tarangire and overnight at the Tarangire Sopa Lodge.  

  Day 13
