HIGHLIGHTS OF NELSON AND AREA

The Kootenay Rockies region is legendary for skiing and snowboarding, as well as heritage attractions and a wide range of lively festivals and events for the whole family. Popular summer activies include camping and RV touring, hiking, mountain biking, white-water rafting, and horseback riding. Winter activities include snowboarding, snowmobiling, heli-skiing, snowshoeing, cat-skiing, and ski touring.

BEACHES

Kootenay Lake- Massive Kootenay Lake is over 100 kilometers (62 miles) long and scattered with remote sandy beaches. It is surrounded by resorts, campgrounds, parks, boat launches, and delightful towns, such as Nelson. Ainsworth Hot Springs , and Kaslo as well as the East Shore communities of Riondel, Crawford Bay, Gray Creek, and Boswell. Kootenay Lake has marinas and boat launches for recreation and a multitude of creek mouths and waterfalls. Because the lake does not freeze in the winter swimming is paradise in the crystal clear water usually not that warm until August but tolerable on a hot summer day. 

HOT SPRINGS

A soak in the soothing restorative hot springs that this region if famous for will leave you relaxed and refreshed. Public hot springs are located at Radium, Fairmont, Ainsworth, Nakusp, Halcyon, and Canyon Hot Springs. Or, you may enjoy venturing out to a wilderness setting natural hot spring. 

 

RECOMMENDED SIGHTSEEING NELSON

CITY OF NELSON:

  • Take a ride on the fully restored electric tramway from downtown to Lakeside park.

  • Self guided or guided heritage walking or driving  tour of Nelson, B.C.

  • People watching and many coffee shops.

  • Unique local fine quality arts and hand made items in downtown shops.

  • Take in the happening night life in Nelson, live Theatre, live music featuring international artists, pub crawls, dance events and so much more on an ongoing basis.

  • Take a tour of Nelson's Brewing Company. Organic Micro-brewed beer right here in Nelson.

  • Base camp of Shambala- the annual Wood Stock style 4 day event outside Salmo. 

  • Gateway to the Kaslo Jazz Fest

  • Skier & Biker interchange city: Transportation and base for various local Cat Ski and Heli Operations: White Grizzly Cat Ski, Baldface Lodge, Snowwater Heli and Cat Ski. Whitewater Ski Area. Downtown a place to  rendezvous and meet backcountry skiers, mountain bikers and other extreme recreators.

  • Home of Canada's only Patagonia Outlet store and many specialty outdoor shops with technical hard gear and soft gear.

  • Cottonwood Falls outdoor market by the waterfall- Tree of Life Market every Saturday spring to fall.

  • Josephine Street outdoor market every Wednesday spring to fall.

  • Bistros, Bakeries, Bars and some of the most amazing restaurants in B.C. are right here Nelson.

  • Organic grocery shopping, co-op stores and gardens sustains a vibrant lifestyle in our mountain town. 

  • Coffee in our village lifestyle town is is the thing of legend. 10 shops in two streets. Organic coffee wafts in the air roasted right here in Nelson.

WHERE TO FISH
Arrow lakes/Silvery Slocan- This paradise of splendid scenery and charming villages is especially well known for large trolling lakes such as the upper and Lower Arrow Lakes which together measure 150 kilometers (90 miles) in length and about three kilometers (two miles) in width. Slocan lake and Trout Lake are also great options, with the both lakes offering over 30 kilometers (19miles) of trolling.

Central Kootenay- The Kootenay River meets the Columbia River near the community of Castlegar, which offers some of the best river fishing in the province. 

Kootenay Lake- Kootenay Lake is 100 kilometers (62 miles) in length and has marinas and boat launches for trollers and a multitude of creek mounts and shore areas popular with fly fishers and spin casters. Kootenay Lake is where Gerrard rainbow trout, the world's largest rainbow trout, originated.
